Reap what you sow, Top Cow…

I called Image Central and Top Cow to complain about the Fathom variant issue “distribution,” and the other concerns I have about Top Cow’s anti-retailer positions. Seems the “retailer support line” posted on their web site has been disconnected. Perfect - seems to sum up the whole issue for me. It was “because of their [...]

Top Cow keeps making these short term gain decisions.

(Sigh…)
>>>I don’t buy it!  The Cow is IMO, doing nearly everything right.  Small line - top quality - appealling to arties, readers, & collectors - getting a word out in the street that’s pulling in new customers.  It’s hard to ask a relatively small studio publisher for more.>>>
Reminds me of Valiant in the early days.
If [...]

I still hate premium comics promotions…

Since I don’t do the ordering any more, I’m not exactly sure how it was listed in the catalog. My customers were under the impression that it was a regularly solicited item with limited quantities. Since we had so many pre-orders for the Chromium DG#1, we reduced the amount of regular copies we ordered. We [...]

Hope I didn’t offend.

Hope I didn’t offend. 75% of my comics sales and 75% of my problems come from 4 companies. Only one portion of one has someone designated to explain the enigma that is a Top-4 Comics Publisher. I give DC Comics a free pass because they really keep me in the loop, but we’re in their [...]

Cable advertising works for comic shops, folks…

“What I am looking for specifically from a “nuts & bolts” type article is, let’s say I am thinking of doing some TV advertising. I would love to be able to walk over to my CR’s and see if any other retailer has talked about this. What are some problems he ran [...]

Double-dipping with bricks and clicks

Actually, off the record, I want to give all of my staff large raises so I don’t have to deal  with hiring knuckleheads. They’re all screaming for a retirement plan, so I’ve got to pony  up for that, now. Keep the talent happy is rule #1.
The problem is that sales are down about 10% across [...]

Comtrac is great for comics retailers running subscription services

Comtrac is great for tracking subs and automated ordering. Cycles are okay. I don’t use  Mel’s POS.
I use Microbiz which is the #1 selling “General Retail” product. Few bugs. Great product.  Accessable database files.
I have considered POS several times.  The problems lie in that so many of the   comics being published still don’t have UPC [...]

Today was idea overdose day.

Talked to Paul. Today was idea overdose day.
Idea: Bound in card in each comic to ask how they got this comic: sub( )  rack ( )  promo( ) etc. What did you like…
Send this in to get a free sketch postcard from Eric. — r

More small press comics promotion ideas… (1998)

I’d like to see small press guys have an “Order 10 (or 20) copies of latest issue, get a signed #1, a mini-poster or shelf-talker, a pack of bag stuffers, and 5 more copies of the same issue signed in our retailer support kit.”
Most small press pubs just don’t do _anything_…
One thing that we’re thinking [...]

Small Press Comics — All I know is doing it the traditional way doesn’t work any more.

Thanks for taking the time to dialogue.
>>>Wizard approached us at San Diego last year, they were given the word to pick out 10 independent publishers who had quality product and looked like they had the potential to break through the small press stigma.  We were one of the “chosen”. <<<
Wow. My hat’s off to Wizard.
>>>Okay, [...]
